Electricity Generation, Demand and Emissions by Country

In 2025 the world generated 31,704 TWh of electricity, up 2.7% on 2024. 42.5% came from low carbon sources and 57.5% from fossil fuels, and the power sector emitted 14,553 MtCO2. These are Ember's annual statistics for 215 countries; World Power Monitor adds live operator data for grid zones where a public feed allows it.

China China generated 10,506 TWh of electricity in 2025, according to Ember. Coal was the largest source at 54.8%, followed by hydro (13.3%) and solar (11.2%). Demand was 10,486 TWh and each kWh generated emitted 528 gCO2/kWh. United States The United States generated 4,520 TWh of electricity in 2025, according to Ember. Gas was the largest source at 40.0%, followed by nuclear (17.4%) and coal (16.3%). Demand was 4,532 TWh and each kWh generated emitted 384 gCO2/kWh. India India generated 2,084 TWh of electricity in 2025, according to Ember. Coal was the largest source at 70.9%, followed by solar (9.3%) and hydro (8.5%). Demand was 2,086 TWh and each kWh generated emitted 671 gCO2/kWh. Russia Russia generated 1,194 TWh of electricity in 2025, according to Ember. Gas was the largest source at 45.6%, followed by nuclear (18.3%) and coal (17.7%). Demand was 1,178 TWh and each kWh generated emitted 447 gCO2/kWh. Japan Japan generated 1,030 TWh of electricity in 2025, according to Ember. Gas was the largest source at 32.8%, followed by coal (32.1%) and solar (9.8%). Canada Canada generated 652 TWh of electricity in 2025, according to Ember. Hydro was the largest source at 52.8%, followed by gas (17.9%) and nuclear (13.1%). Germany Germany generated 497 TWh of electricity in 2025, according to Ember. Wind was the largest source at 26.6%, followed by coal (21.0%) and solar (18.1%). Nuclear was the largest source at 68.8%, followed by hydro (10.4%) and wind (8.2%). Demand was 476 TWh and each kWh generated emitted 41 gCO2/kWh. Iran Iran generated 399 TWh of electricity in 2025, according to Ember. Gas was the largest source at 73.3%, followed by other fossil (21.3%) and hydro (3.0%). Demand was 398 TWh and each kWh generated emitted 656 gCO2/kWh. Saudi Arabia Saudi Arabia generated 455 TWh of electricity in 2024, according to Ember. Gas was the largest source at 63.3%, followed by other fossil (34.5%) and solar (1.8%). Demand was 455 TWh and each kWh generated emitted 692 gCO2/kWh.
